Red Wing, MN to Dubuque, IA

Tamera and I woke at about 7:30am, later than usual, so we got off to a late start.  I wore shorts today thinking we wouldn’t be on any major roads and would be traveling at lower speeds along the river roadways.  We left the motel about 9am but without breakfast because the motel only had bad juice and stale doughnuts.  So we went back to Liberty’s, the same place we ate the night before.  Unfortunately, the service was poor and the food wasn’t very good so it took forever to be served and to get started on our day’s ride.

As suggested by the limo driver (owner) of the restaurant the night before, we went up to the scenic view at the town’s Memorial Park and caught a great view of the city of Red Wing and the Mississippi River below.  We took pictures and after leaving the park stopped for gas but drove from one station to another only able to find 91 octane fuel available.

We crossed into Wisconsin as recommended by the restaurant owner who said that the road (WI35) on that side hugged the river more and gave better views.  This was a very pretty ride with great views of the Mississippi River.  Because we hadn’t been able find a reasonable ABCs touring picture in Wisconsin, we stopped at the post office in Pepin WI for a picture.  We learned that this was the birthplace of the woman that wrote “Little House on the Prairie.”

We continued south on WI35 until crossing back into Minnesota at Winona where we took a picture at the post office for the HOG ABC’s tour and then stopped at the H-D dealership located there.  We left out on US61 which merged with an interstate highway I90 on our way to Onalaska, WI and the La Crosse area H-D dealership.

We stopped at the Wisconsin Welcome Center for a picture there, found our way to the dealership, then to a Burger King for lunch, and gas next door.  We took the route recommended at the welcome center around La Crosse and were back on WI35 south heading to Dubuque, IA.

Again we experienced wonderful views of the Mississippi River as we road along on WI35.  At Prairie du Chien, the road veered away from the river but we stayed on WI35 in order to make time getting to Dubuque.  This part of the road wasn’t close to the river but the views were of pleasant hilly pastures and easy rolling and curving highways.  We stopped in Lancaster WI to refuel and spoke with a lady who rode with her husband and they had just bought a Road King at the dealership in Dubuque.  She helped us with directions to the dealership.

We merged with US61 at Lancaster and then US151 on our way into Dubuque.  We rode through Dubuque on the way to the dealership and got there just at 6pm as it was closing.  They let us in to buy a dealer pin and dip dot and we decided to stay nearby for the night.  Mike suggested a Super 8 motel that he noticed which happened to have a Mexican restaurant next door.

On the short ride there, Mike’s bike quit running twice; it started right back up but he was concerned.  We inspected his electronics and noticed that his directionals, brake light, and speedometer were not working.  He rode the bike around the motel’s parking lot and it continued to die when he tried stopping.  We ate at Los Aztecas where Tamera didn’t like her peach margarita and returned it but the food was good.
